Why Was My Word Rejected? A Guide to the SpellBee Word List

A real word can still be rejected. Here is how the SpellBee word list works, what it includes, and how to get more of your guesses accepted.

You type a word that is obviously real, press Enter, and the hive says no. It happens to every player. The reason is almost always one of a few rules, and once you know them, you can stop guessing against the board and start guessing with it.

The four rules that come before the dictionary

Before the game checks whether a word exists, it checks whether the word can play. It must be at least four letters long, include the center letter, use only the seven hive letters, and not have been found already. If any of those fail, the word is rejected before the word list is consulted. That is why a perfectly good word can fail when it uses a letter that is not in the hive.

The word list is curated, not complete

SpellBee uses a list of 22,401 common English words. It is built from the public-domain ENABLE word-game list, filtered by frequency so the game favors words a reasonably well-read player would recognize, and filtered for profanity. The goal is a fun, fair board, not a complete record of English.

This is true of most word games. Each game has its own lexicon. A word that is accepted in one spelling bee game may be rejected in another, and the reverse is also true. The word list is part of the game's design, not a universal referee.

Proper nouns, abbreviations, and multi-word entries

Names of people, places, brands, days, and months are generally excluded. So are abbreviations, acronyms, and entries that need a hyphen or a space. The hive accepts one word at a time, so “ice cream”, “e-mail”, and “New York” are not candidates even if every letter is available.

Some lowercase words overlap with names, and a few unusual entries can slip through a large word list. Treat the rule as a strong guideline rather than a promise about every single word.

Inflections are included, but not always

The list contains many inflected forms: plurals, past tenses, and participles. You will find CATS, RUNNING, and CAREFUL. But frequency filtering means rare forms are more likely to be missing. If a base word is accepted, try the plural, the past tense, and the -ing form. If one form is missing, another may still work.

British and American spellings

Both spelling traditions appear in the list. COLOUR and COLOR, CENTRE and CENTER, ORGANISE and ORGANIZE, TRAVELLED and TRAVELED are all accepted. That is useful when a hive is one letter away from a word you know. If your first spelling is rejected, try the other convention before you move on.

Modern words and older word lists

Some words that feel completely ordinary are missing because the base list is older than they are, or because they began life as abbreviations or compound phrases. Internet-era vocabulary is especially uneven. If a modern word is rejected, it is usually a gap in the list rather than a mistake on your part.

Obscure words, dialect, and technical terms

The list leans toward common English. Technical terms, dialect words, archaic spellings, and very specialized vocabulary are usually absent. That is deliberate: a board that accepted every word in the dictionary would be frustrating in a different way, because the answer count would balloon and the pangram would become impossible to reason about.

A checklist before you type

  • At least four letters.
  • Includes the yellow center.
  • Uses only the letters in the hive.
  • Has not already been found.
  • Is a common word rather than a name, abbreviation, or phrase.
  • Try the base form, then the plural, past tense, and -ing form.
  • Try both British and American spellings.
  • Try the common variant before the obscure one.

When a rejection feels unfair

Every word game draws a line somewhere. The line is there to keep the board fun and the scores comparable. If a word you love is missing, the most useful response is to ask what common variant the list might contain instead. Often the answer is one letter away.
